Use gst.gov.in and choose Services → Search Taxpayer to verify a GSTIN/UIN or find available taxpayer details. For an application, use the portal’s Track Application Status function with the ARN. Public search results help verify registration status but do not replace invoice, bank or counterparty due diligence.
Start with the law effective on the transaction date
This article was checked against official GST material available on 2026-07-29. Rates, exemptions, thresholds and portal steps can change. Match the exact supply, HSN/SAC, parties, state, place of supply and effective date to the implementing notification.
Search by GSTIN/UIN
Open the official portal, select Services, Search Taxpayer and the GSTIN/UIN option, enter the identifier and captcha, then review legal name, trade name, status, constitution, registration date and return-filing information made public.
Search by PAN or name
The available portal options can change. Use only the fields shown on the official site. A name match is not enough where several entities share similar names; confirm the legal name, state code and principal place details.
Track an ARN
Use Services → Registration → Track Application Status and enter the ARN. Status messages such as pending for clarification, approved, rejected or assigned for processing require different next steps.
Read the result safely
Active status does not prove that every invoice is genuine or that the supplier will report it. Check the GSTIN on the invoice, bank beneficiary, business name, state, return filing and e-invoice QR where applicable.
Common problems
For no result, remove spaces, recheck all 15 characters and state code, try the official portal later during downtime and avoid repeated captcha failures. Use the portal helpdesk for unresolved technical errors.
Security checklist
Bookmark the official HTTPS address, use a password manager, never share OTP/DSC, review authorised signatories and avoid third-party tools that request portal credentials merely to perform a public search.

Can I search a GSTIN without logging in?
Public taxpayer-search functions are generally available without taxpayer login.
Is ARN the same as GSTIN?
No. ARN tracks an application; GSTIN identifies an approved registration.
Does active status guarantee ITC?
No. Invoice, receipt, supplier reporting and statutory conditions still apply.
Can I download another taxpayer’s certificate?
The public search provides limited details; certificate access is through the registered taxpayer dashboard.
What if no record appears?
Check characters and state code, then retry on the official portal.
Should I share an OTP with a consultant?
No. Keep OTP and authentication credentials confidential.
